Officer cleared in police involved shooting, suspect indicted

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Bibb County grand jury has indicted Walter Cornelius Smith for his involvement in an officer involved shooting on March 20, in the Village Green neighborhood.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office a routine traffic stop was being conducted which involved Sgt. Jeffrey Johnson when Smith pulled out a gun.

Smith was shot during the exchange of gunfire.

He is facing charges of felony obstruction, aggravated assault, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and misdemeanor obstruction of an officer.

The grand jury took no action against Sgt. Johnson.

The case against Walter Smith is still open.

“We feel like it was an appropriate decision the GBI investigated and they made their findings known to the grand jury and the grand jury had the opportunity to ask questions of Sgt. Johnson,” said Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney, David Cooke.

Cooke says Smith used his car as a weapon against Sgt. Johnson during the Village Green incident.

He added, the indictment contains charges and does not prove that Smith is guilty. The district attorney says Smith is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial.
