MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Multiple areas in Amerson River Park and along the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail will be closed starting Friday due to rising water levels in the Ocmulgee River, according to a news release from Macon-Bibb County.

The Parks & Beautification Department will close boat ramps at both ends of Amerson River Park, dirt trails around the park’s pond and the paved trail between the Overlook and the north boat ramp. Additionally, the Spring Street boat ramp and sections of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail will be closed until conditions improve.

“We are expecting the Ocmulgee River to rise due to the recent rains in the region, therefore we are closing the entire park,” Parks & Beautification Director Michael Glisson said. “We will reassess as soon as we are able and open the park when we determine it is safe for everyone to enjoy.”

Closures will remain in place until the water recedes and any necessary cleanup is completed. Visitors are urged to avoid marked-off areas and be prepared for additional closures as water levels continue to rise.

The National Water Prediction Service shows the river at the 5th Street bridge reached flood stage at 18 feet on Thursday, with forecasts Thursday night predicting the level to rise to 25.3 feet on Saturday.
