UPDATE: Access to the Ocmulgee River at Macon’s Amerson River Park is back open as the flow has fallen back below 2,000 cubic feet per second, Macon-Bibb County announced Friday morning.

“We want everyone to have a safe fourth of July weekend, especially when enjoying our beautiful waterways,” Fire Chief Shane Edwards said. “Please wear a life jacket, be aware of your surroundings, and don’t underestimate the water.”

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Access to the Ocmulgee River at Amerson River Park is closed until further notice due to dangerous water conditions, according to Macon-Bibb County officials.

The news release states that recent rainfall has pushed the river’s flow to more than 3,000 cubic feet per second—well above safe recreational levels. The river will remain closed to the public until the flow drops below at least 2,000 cubic feet per second.

The closure comes just days ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, a peak time for outdoor recreation. Emergency personnel are monitoring river levels and hope to reopen access in time for the weekend.

“We want people to stay safe this 4th of July week, and the river can be dangerous under normal circumstances, but as we have witnessed in the past, it can be especially hazardous during high flow rates. It’s just not worth the risk,” says Fire Chief Shane Edwards. “We know people want to be on the river as soon as possible, so we will be monitoring river levels hour by hour.”

While access at Amerson River Park is closed, the Spring Street boat ramp remains open for fishing boats only.
