Numbers are in from Memorial Day weekend; 17 people killed in car wrecks

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Georgia State Patrol says nearly three times as many people lost their lives over the Memorial Day weekend than this time last year.

Numbers are in and officers say 17 people died over the holiday weekend.

There were more than 330 people pulled over for DUI.

Sgt. David Holland with Georgia State Patrol says it’s important for drivers to stay vigilant, and it all starts with the basics.

“Primarily be a cautious driver. Be alert, be defensive, don’t let road rage take over. If you see somebody that’s not driving the way they should…back off don’t try to get in front of the,” Holland said.

Holland says GSP made more than 500 stops over the weekend.

With vacation season kicking off, Holland says officers will be on high patrol the entire time.
