New X-ray machine helps GBI analyze cases

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – “It does allow us to take better imaging and the best use of technology that’s available,” said Lab Manager Brian Hargett.

Your top crime investigators need the top technology.

“This allows us to demonstrate the clarity of the technology that we use,” said Hargett.

And when an X-ray can create a huge break in the case, you want it to show you even the smallest details.

“We can change the contrast and the image size if we want to zoom in on certain aspects,” said Hargett.

The GBI Central Crime Lab on Riggins Mill Road in Macon picked up a new tool recently.

“So the clarity of this image really enhances what we were able to do beforehand,” said Hargett.

Lab Manager Brian Hargett says a new X-Ray machine will cut down the time it takes to analyze human remains significantly.

“The body is placed on the table and scan is programmed depending on what they need to see and then they are able to scan across the body,” said Hargett.

It used to take nearly an hour…now, it’s down to 13 seconds.

“It could also be a gunshot wound case where there might be a single or multiple gunshot wound that needs to be documented,” said Hargett.

And that’s evidence that could change a case.

Hargett says the machine cost the state $250,000, and he’s thankful for the upgrade.
