New record shop opens in Downtown Macon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A new store in Macon is bringing back the classics. Falling Star Records had its grand opening Thursday afternoon.

The new record shop is located on Second Street downtown. It’s near the Cox Capitol Theatre and in walking distance from The Creek radio station.

“Vinyl is making a come back, it’s hip again,” said Falling Star Records Co-owner, Wes Griffith.

“People say that record stores went away because people stopped buying vinyl,” said Creek Media General Manager, Tony Doolin. “When in reality, vinyl went away because there were no record stores.”

The idea came from Creek Media, LLC staff  and all it took was 5 weeks to get it up and running.

“My parents owned actually owned a record store on Vineville Avenue while they were going to Mercer University in the early 70s and it was called Falling Star Records,” said Griffith.

So when Griffith and Doolin decided to open up the shop, it only felt natural to name it that.

“Music has always been something that’s real dear to me,” said Griffith. “I bring shows to Macon at the Cox Capital Theatre. We have a new radio station now. We try to introduce American Roots music to people.”

With thousands of records you will find that and plenty of other genres of music at Falling Star.

“We focus on a lot of the music that obviously the Creek plays, but that’s a pretty broad playlist as well,” Doolin. “There are artists that always do well, especially in Macon, you’re always going to do well with the Allman Brothers and Otis Redding, James Brown and Little Richard.”

“This is just a natural extension to kind of continue sharing music with people,” said Griffith. “We’re just hoping people come down and have experiences like I did as a child. Discovering old music and classic older music.”

Falling Star Records is also buying vinyl records. So if you have some that are in good condition, you can sell them.

The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 7 PM.
