New president of FVSU has new ideas for growth

FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Eight months in and Fort Valley State’s newest president has finally been installed to lead the university. Friday, hundreds of students, faculty, staff and leaders from around middle Georgia celebrated the inauguration of Dr. Ivelaw Griffith.

How is Fort Valley State University going to make that happen?

It’s a dream Dr. Ivelaw Griffith, the ninth president at the school, has a few ideas for.

“For me it’s important to always see the glass as half full, and to get to the full glass you’ve got to dream,” Griffith said.

He addressed the hundreds in attendance for his inauguration Friday, with plans to push the university forward and help renew its image.

From the very beginning, Griffith says he’s pointed out several flaws the university has had and he’s already got plans in motion to increase the school’s prestige.

“Later on in the summer, we’re going to open a pool that was closed for six years. We’ve started an honors program. We’re recruiting the charter class,” he said.

The university’s bottom line needed some trimming as well.

“We spent $2.7 million on electricity alone on this campus, that’s too much,” Griffith said.

So he and his staff have installed light sensors that’ll conserve energy, saving the school money.

For Griffith… it’s the little things that need to be taken care of so the school can move on to bigger and better.

And he’s already in the process of adding more people to his staff to make his dream….

“My first hire was an AD. My second hire was a director of development, we’ve got to raise the funds. My third hire was a director of marketing, we’ve got to image, we’ve got to re-brand. We’ve got to tell the story better,” Griffith said.

a reality.

Griffith told 41NBC in a five year plan for the university he’d like to see a business school linking agriculture and business in Fort Valley. He added he wants to give more students the opportunity to travel abroad, and he even wants to bring soccer to the school’s athletic program.
