New “pocket park” planned for Forsyth

FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A new park is coming to downtown Forsyth after almost 10 years of planning.

Forsyth Main Street is working on a new “pocket park” right next to the welcome center on North Lee Street. The area used to be an old sub station for Georgia Power. Executive Director Loraine Khoury says residents will be able to do just about anything at the park.

“It could even have a small wedding under this canopy here that we have in our little gazebo because it’s lighted and we have electrical outlets so we can put in music or whatever,” Khoury says.

It cost the city about $43,000 including an additional $4,000 in donations to put the park together. There are engraved bricks and benches throughout the park along with Wi-Fi access.

Personnel from the Department of Corrections constructed the park. A design studio from the University of Georgia helped create the park’s look.

Khoury says the park was supposed to be finished now, but because of weather there have been several construction delays. She says she plans for the park to open in the next few weeks.
