New Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice from Milledgeville to be Sworn In

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Supreme Court of Georgia is getting a new Chief Justice and he is from Milledgeville.

According to the high court, Presiding Justice Hugh P. Thompson was unanimously elected as the new Chief Justice. He will be the main spokesperson for the Court, as well as the entire judiciary. He will serve one four-year term.

Justice P. Harris Hines will become the new Presiding Justice, wo serves in the Chief Justice’s absence. Both men will be sworn in on Thursday.

Thompson was Chief Justice of the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit when former Governor Zell Miller appointed him in 1994 to the Georgia Supreme Court.

Thompson will be the state’s 30th Chief Justice.
