New bronze bear for Mercer University football stadium

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mercer University has a new good luck charm gracing the Five Star Stadium.

Irwin Belk, former president of Belk department stores gave the university a 1,800 pound bronze bear. The 10-foot statue sits near the main gate of the stadium.

Director of the Mercer Athletic Foundation, Brian Gerrity says “It will be a focal point for pictures and a place to rally.”

The statue was sculpted using 500 pounds of clay and about 150 hours of labor.
