New $50 million development coming to downtown Macon
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning Commission approved a $50 million dollar project Monday night to upgrade a part of downtown.
Construction of a new hotel, parking deck, apartment complex and restaurant could begin as early as January 2017.
Tim Thornton is one of the project developers. He says the economic impact will far outweigh the $50 million cost.
“It’ll create a lot of tax-based sales tax, huge economic impact on all of Bibb County and particularly good for downtown,” Thornton said. “It’ll really be another big shot in the arm for downtown.”
The hotel, which hasn’t been named yet, and parking deck will be built on the land currently being used as a parking lot at 690 Poplar Street.
According to Thornton, the Newman Exchange Building at the corner of First and Poplar streets. next to the parking lot, will be renovated into a restaurant and possibly even a rooftop bar.
