MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon Water Authority (MWA) will host the 19th annual Kids Fishing Derby at Javors Lucas Lake on Saturday, March 2.

The free event for Derby participants ages 3 to 16, and their accompanying adults, will offer prizes for the overall biggest catch of the day and to winners in four age group categories, an MWA news release said.

Registration will begin at 6 a.m. that day. Young anglers will cast their lines starting at 7 a.m. The weigh-in to determine prize winners is set for 10 a.m.

The entrance is at 150 Broach Lane, which is accessible from Upper River Road. Refreshments will be served, but participants must bring their own bait and tackle.

After the competition and awards presentation, families are welcome to fish the rest of the day.

Since the competition has been moved to March the last few years, young anglers will have an opportunity to catch seasonal trout, in addition to catfish, bass and bream, which populate the lake year-round, according to the release.

Javors Lucas Lake, MWA’s 581-acre drinking water reservoir, has been closed to anglers since the end of last year. The lake has been stocked with 500 pounds of catfish and 1,000 pounds of trout.

No fishing permit is required to participate in the MWA Kids Fishing Derby since the event is held on one of the select days of the year when the Georgia Department of Natural Resources allows fishing on Georgia waters without a license.
