Mother: Son Nearly Kidnapped Outside of Springdale Elementary

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Police cars lined the outside of Springdale Elementary on Wednesday, after a mother claims her child was almost abducted by a stranger on school grounds.

Patricia Thompson said shortly after dismissal, her second grader was nearly snatched by an older male while walking home from school. The man “groped” another girl’s hair and when he refused to let go of her son, he screamed.

“So my son yelled,” Thompson said, “when he yelled, he came out of his bookbag and that alerted other parents.”

Another parent noticed the commotion and stepped in, Thompson said.

“Another parent tackled the guy and shortly after the principal came outside to stop the guy too,” she said.

Bibb County Risk Management Director David Gowan released few details on Wednesday other than to say that law enforcement is contact with the man. In news release, the district stated that, “several parents saw the whole incident, and were able to keep the man there until emergency personnel could arrive.”

“Well, I can just confirm that it was suspicious adult acting suspiciously with children outside of the school during dismissal,” he said.

Parents were notified about the incident later in the evening via a phone message and Gowan said a letter will be sent out. According to Thompson, she was never once notified by the school district that her children were in danger.

“So I had to hear it from a relative that my kid was in custody with a police officer and being abducted by a guy,” she said.

While investigators continue to wrestle with the case, Thompson said she can rest a little easier knowing her son is prepared, even in the scariest situations.

“You know if mom pass out in the car, if mom pass out it in the house, if I’m in a wreck, if a stranger approach you it’s something I continually practice with my kids,” she said.
