More heat expected Tuesday; Middle Georgians should follow the tropics

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Highs will reach the 90s again Tuesday and the Peach State could see tropical impacts later this week.
This Evening
The heat of the dog days of summer returned to the Peach State this past weekend and it has carried into the new week. Heat indexes this afternoon reached the upper 90s and low triple digits. The mugginess isn’t budging either as dew points remain firm in the upper 60s/lower 70s. A few spotty showers/storms will remain possible through the evening and into tonight. Tonight’s lows should all remain ABOVE the 70 degree mark, or about 6-8 degrees above average for this time of year. Wind will remain calm from the south-southwest under partly cloudy skies.
Tomorrow
One more hot day for Middle Georgia on Tuesday as highs again push the mid 90s with real feels climbing into the upper 90s/triple digits. Skies will be partly sunny with a few isolated showers and storms possible over the back half of the day. Wind will be light out of the south-southwest with gusts reaching 10-15 mph.
Overnight will be partly cloudy again with lows expected to stay around 70 degrees. Wind will shift more towards the south-southeast overnight as well, remaining rather calm.
The Tropics
Tropical Depression Nine (likely to become Tropical Storm Helene in the near future) is churning in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Current NHC track takes it north in the Gulf with landfall expected somewhere along the Florida Panhandle. Significant impacts do look possible for Middle Georgia later this week, including the potential for torrential downpours, powerful sustained winds and even more powerful gusts, and brief spin-up tornadoes. More will become clear as the storm evolves. There is also an area in the eastern Atlantic to monitor as it has a 70% chance of development in the next 7 days.
