Monroe County organizations give away 1,000+ boxes of food

FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Monroe County families have full fridges tonight thanks to a food giveaway.

A food giveaway was made possible by CARES Act funding and partnerships with:

  • The Society of Saint Andrew
  • Monroe County Hospital
  • Monroe County Schools
  • The Monroe County Chamber of Commerce

Monroe County Schools Superintendent Mike Hinkman says there is a need for events like this.

“We’ve got a lot of people that are struggling,” Hinkman said. “A lot of people are unemployed right now, and we’re just glad to be able to do something to provide some help for our families and community members.”

1,200 boxes of food were handed out at the giveaway Tuesday. The event started at 10 a.m. and finished up 25 minutes earlier than originally planned, because the food was gone.

If you missed out on the food drive, look out for other community events. The groups hope to hold another giveaway soon. You can also check with your local food bank.
