Gas spill shuts down several roads in Monroe County

Emergency officials say crews are working to clean the spill and reopen roads.

MONROE COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A gas spill shut down several roads in Monroe County Monday night, leading to several road closures.

According to Facebook posts from Monroe County Emergency Management Agency and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, High Falls Road near the BP (formerly Sunoco) was closed because of a gas spill just before 8:30 p.m. Portions of Buck Creek Road and Martha Lane were also blocked. No estimated time for the roads to reopen was provided, and drivers were asked to use alternate routes.

A Monroe County EMA update at 9:20 p.m. said the closures expanded to include Boxankle Road.

“We have units on scene working to get the spill cleaned and roads open,” the post said. “Thank you for your patience.

Officials have not released information about what caused the gas spill or whether anyone was injured. We’ve reached out to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for additional information.
