Monroe County deputies shot responding to a suicide call

BOLINGBROKE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Monroe County Coroner Joey Proctor tells 41NBC Monroe County Deputy Michael Norris is brain dead and is being kept on life support until Monday morning.

The 24-year-old deputy, along with Deputy Jeff Wilson, responded to a call of a man attempting suicide Saturday night just before 6 at 111 Haley Lane.  The two deputies exchanged gunfire with the man.  Both deputies were shot and taken to the hospital.

The suspect, 46-year-old Christopher Keith Calmer of Monroe County, was also shot and taken to the hospital before being released Sunday.  He is charged with murder, attempted murder, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and five counts of aggravated assault.  He is being housed at an undisclosed location.

The Norris family has asked for the following to be released:

Deputy Norris sustained injuries in the line of duty yesterday, Sept. 13, 2014, that were not survivable and has been determined brain dead today, Sept. 14, 2014. In keeping with his career of service, he is an organ donor. While matching organ donor recipients are sought, Deputy Norris has been placed on life support at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.

Deputy Norris began his career with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office approximately two years ago as a jail officer. He served as a school resource officer at K.B. Sutton Elementary School for the 2013-2014 school year and transferred to the Patrol Division in June. Deputy Norris is a dedicated law enforcement officer whose career, while brief, is outstanding.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the outpouring of support during this difficult time. It is our hope that Deputy Norris’s last act of true service — organ donation — will prevent another family from suffering a similar loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Norris’s wife, parents and other family members.
