Milledgeville’s Digital Bridges Hopes to Find Funding to Continue Mission

Pushing technology–that’s what Digital Bridges in the heart of downtown Milledgeville wants to do.

From finding a job to checking email, the community-based initiative aims to give people the resources they need to succeed in a technology-filled world.

Roland King, a frequent patron of Digital Bridges, says the initiative helped him find a job.

“They helped me with filling out resumes and applications and things of that–online and stuff because everything has gone digital now and a lot of people don’t take paper applications anymore.”

Ronald Wells, another patron, says he appreciates the relaxed atmosphere.

“Everybody can just do their own thing, mind their business, get on the computer and feel free to surf the web,” said Wells.

But now, Digital Bridges faces a change. A one-time grant from the Knight Foundation funds everything, and that money has run out after four years.

“Over that period of time we were charged with finding a sustainability strategy and unfortunately we were unable to ever find something that would make the entire space fully sustainable,” said Tommy Cook, program director.”We found multiple income streams that helped here and there and helped us continue going as long as we have.”

Cook says while they have to move, their goal won’t change.

“It’s always going to be an ongoing mission, and just because we’re not going to have this physical location, doesn’t mean that this type of help won’t be available anymore.”
