Milledgeville musician hoping for peace through lyrics, t-shirts

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – One Milledgeville musician is urging fellow residents to spread peace instead of violence.

He’s using his platform to bring change to the community and people are behind him.

“We do all fencing: aluminum, steel, chain link, wood, it doesn’t matter we do all fencing,” Donnie Cannie, the owner of the fencing division at Pamlico Pools, said.

The store sits tucked in a corner just of the busy North Columbia Street. Cannie and hist staff have built fences for years.

“I got a voice. So I just want my voice to be heard,” he said.

In addition to his day job, Donnie is a rapper. He’s signed with popular southern rap group Nappy Roots’ label.

“We want to bring Milledgeville back. I want to come to Milledgeville to do shows,” Cannie said.

There’s one problem. Donnie says the violence in the city has slowed him and other artists from performing.

That’s why he’s campaigning with lyrics and t-shirts to increase the peace.

“We just need love. Innocent people getting shot up and it’s been going on for so long,” Cannie said.

As the number of drive-by shootings continue to rise in the city – the latest killing a mother in May Donnie says enough is enough.

“Any time I hear about a shooting. You know because Milledgeville is so small and everybody knows me and everybody knows I love everybody,” Cannie said.

He’s hoping his “D-Boy Speaks Increase Da Peace” t-shirts help spread that love.

It’s caught on with thousands of likes on Facebook.

“When you put this shirt on, you’ve got to really want to increase the peace,” Cannie said.

A motive, a message, and a mission for the city of Milledgeville.
