Milledgeville Fire Department Receives Free Smoke Alarms for Needy Citizens

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Milledgeville Fire Department is handing out dozens of free smoke detectors to residents thanks to a donation from the Georgia’s Safety Fire Commissioner.

On Monday, Commissioner Ralph Hudgens stopped by the fire station to drop off three dozen smoke alarms as part of the state wide program “Operation Safe Home.” It provides free smoke detectors to residents who can’t afford to buy one. Commissioner Hudgens says fire alarms can save lives, but residents must leave the batteries inside the alarms and replace them on a regular basis.

“The overwhelming majority of deaths, like 80 fire related deaths, are in homes that do not have working and I specify, I state working smoke alarm,” Hudgens said.

The fire department adds this donation will have a big impact on the community.

“We’re going to try to put two per household if they do not have anything now,” Sgt. Keith Meeks said. “You’re looking at 18 homes. If we can save one person out of those 18, we’ve done our part.”

“Operation Safe Home” has donated more than 165,000 free smoke alarms to needy citizens.
