Middle Georgia school zone speed camera enforcement resumes as students return to class
Houston County students return to class on Wednesday.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Macon-Bibb County will activate speed limit cameras in school zones at Vineville Academy of the Arts and Heritage Elementary School on Monday, August 5, according to a county news release.
Initially, only warnings will be issued for the new zones, with full enforcement and ticketing beginning Monday, September 9.
On the same day, speed limit cameras will start issuing tickets at Carter Elementary, Hartley Elementary, Heard Elementary, Springdale Elementary, Appling Middle & Northeast High, Ballard-Hudson Middle & Ingram-Pye Elementary, Rutland Middle & High, Southwest High, Weaver Middle and Westside High.
The cameras enforce speed limits on school days from one hour before school starts until one hour after dismissal. They monitor both reduced and regular speed limits, issuing citations only when a vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour. The first citation will cost $100, with each subsequent citation costing $150. The county says funds from these fines will support local law enforcement and public safety initiatives.
“The flashing lights in a school zone only indicate the reduced limit around the beginning and end of school,” the release stated. “The cameras enforce both the reduced speed limit and the regular speed limit in the middle of the day.”
The enforcement schedule for Bibb County schools is as follows:
- Elementary School: School Time: 8:20 a.m. – 3:20 p.m.; Enforcement: 7:20 a.m. – 4:20 p.m.
- Middle School: School Time: 9:05 a.m. – 4:05 p.m.; Enforcement: 8:05 a.m. – 5:05 p.m.
- High School: School Time: 7:30 a.m. – 2:35 p.m.; Enforcement: 6:30 a.m. – 3:35 p.m.
The county says the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office will review all citations to ensure compliance with Macon-Bibb’s Code. These citations will not affect a person’s driving record or insurance points.
