Middle Georgia Lawyers Win Statewide Competition to Fight Child Hunger

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Some Middle Georgia lawyers are helping to put a dent in child hunger in the area at the request of the state Attorney General.

Monday at the Macon Rotary Club luncheon, Attorney General Sam Olens honored students from Mercer Law School and Warner Robins attorney Bo Sammons as the winners of the 2013 Legal Food Frenzy.

The competition between Georgia lawyers raised food for community food banks. The winners raised 18,000 pounds of food between them.

“It’s great because here we have a statewide competition, and the two big winners both come from the Macon area; you know, when you’re in law school you’re not exactly full of money. And when you’re donating those limited resources to help children that otherwise don’t have adequate nutrition–I think that really says a lot about our future lawyers,” says Olens.

“”One of my clients is the Houston County Children’s Services, so I see there’s a lot of poverty in Middle Georgia and a lot of poverty in my community,” Sammons told 41NBC.

This is the second time Mercer Law School has won the Food Frenzy competition–they also won last year. Sammons and his rock group, “The Alex Tjoland Band” performed two concerts to raise the food funds.
