MGSC To Honor Former Baseball Coach, Players From Championship Teams

COCHRAN, Georgia (MGSC RELEASE) – Middle Georgia State College will honor former coach Robert Sapp and baseball team alumni Kal Daniels, Jeff Treadway and Ernest Riles – all of whom played in the Major Leagues – at the Diamond Club Jamboree dinner on Saturday, Feb. 1.

The dinner begins at 7 p.m. in Georgia Dining Hall on the Cochran Campus. Admission is $20 for non-Diamond Club members; free for members. (Participants may join the Diamond Club at the door.) Admission for children 12 and under is $10. Other former players from the National Championship teams of 1979, 1980, 1982, and 1995, as well as MGSC’s new president, Dr. Christopher Blake, also will attend.

Prior to the dinner, the MGSC Knights will take on Southern Union Community College at 2 p.m. at historic Stuckey Field on the Cochran Campus. Pregame ceremonies begin at 1:45 p.m. Paul Knight will make his debut as Knights head coach.

Robert Sapp spent 20 years as head baseball coach as what is now Middle Georgia State College. He accumulated a record of 890 wins and four National Championships. He led his former Middle Georgia College Warriors teams to nine Region 17 championships and won the Southwest District seven times. He was named NJCAA Coach of the Year four times and was the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Coach of the Year nine times. He was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 1995. Later in his career, Sapp was head coach at the University of Georgia.

Former players attending include:

• Kal Daniels: (1982) Member of the 1982 National Championship team. Drafted in 1982 by the Cincinnati Reds, also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs.

• Jeff Treadway: (1980-81) Member of the 1980 National Championship team. Drafted in 1984 by the Cincinnati Reds. He also played for the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Dodgers and Montreal Expos.

• Ernest Riles: (1980-81) Member of the 1980 National Championship team. Drafted in 1981 by the Milwaukee Brewers. He also played for the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox.
