MGSC Beats Columbus State 55-0

COCHRAN, Georgia (MGSC RELEASE) – In a game that matched up two top ten teams in number 1 Middle Georgia State College and number 7 Columbus State University, the Knights of MGSC made a statement to show why they have climbed to number 1 in the National Club Football Association.

The game started off rough for the Cougars gaining no yards on their first drive and being forced to punt. The Knights got the ball at the 50 and proceeded to put the ball in the endzone five plays later on a 14 yard run by Rico Lyons. The game would only get worse for the Cougars after that point.

The Knights D stood tall forcing the Cougars to two more 3 and outs before putting the ball back in the endzone on a 4 yard run by Reggie Stevens. The Knights got an interception by Ken Hughes on the Cougars next drive and drove 58 yards completing a 3 yard pass from Button to Mahoganey for the third score and a 21-0 lead.

The Cougars would come up short on fourth down the next series and give the Knights a short field and ended up with a seven yard TD run by Button. The Knights would score again on the next drive with a pass from Jovan Smith to Mahoganey for 20 yards just before halftime to go into the half up 35-0.

The second half did not start any better for the Cougars as the Knights returned the kickoff 63 yards but a fumble by Hughes would roll out of the back of the endzone for a touchback and a positive play for the Cougars. That glimmer of hope did not last long and the Knights forced another punt that would result in a 37 yard run for Lyons and his second TD of the game and a 41-0 lead as the 2 point conversion failed.

The Knights would go on get an interception by Najee Mitchell in Cougar territory to set up a 15 yard TD pass from Button to Outlaw and a 2 point conversion would make it 49-0. The Cougars only scoring opportunity came as the fourth quarter started on a field goal attempt but Ken Hughes broke through to preserve the shutout for the Knights. The Knights would add one more score on a 52 yard touchdown from Button to Eric Sankey and a 55-0 lead.

The Knights move to 6-0 on the season and will host the conference playoff with OC Tech, potentially on 11/23 but still to be determined for time and location. The win also moves the Knights one win closer to a berth in the National Championship game on December 7 in Salem, VA. The Knights travel to Greenville, SC for a matchup with Greenville Sports Academy on Sunday October 27.
