Mercer’s Hayes Signs a Pair of International Recruits

MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – Head men’s tennis coach Eric Hayes released the first signings of his Mercer tenure on Wednesday, announcing that Manuel de Luis Lamelas of Marbella, Spain and Eric Boherman of Stockholm, Sweden have penned agreements.

“We are very pleased to have Manuel and Eric join the program in January,” Hayes said. “Not only do they bring in the talent to help us challenge for a national ranking and a conference championship but are also very strong students and will fit right in with the academic standards at Mercer. They both understand the physical and mental demands to be successful.”

Luis Lamelas will join Mercer midway through the academic year with four years of eligibility after a standout junior career overseas. Most recently, de Luis Lamelas earned six ATP doubles points while playing alongside Salazar Martin Jose Anton in the 2012 season.

Luis Lamelas also boasts notable singles victories, including several ranked in Spain’s top 100 men’s rankings. In addition to wins over Joos Bos (No. 1500 in ATP Rankings) and Mario Vilella (No. 996 in ATP Rankings), his most notable victory is arguably a triumph over Skander Mansouri of Tunisia, the No. 41 junior in the world according to the International Tennis Federation.

Boherman currently checks in at No. 36 in Sweden’s men’s singles rankings and is coming off doubles quarterfinals appearances of the Swedish National Championships in each of the last two years. In 2013, his run to the quarterfinals included a trip to the finals in the regional championship.
