Mercer University Professor Creates Prosthetic Legs

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mercer University Professor of Engineering, Dr. Ha Van Vo, and students at Mercer created prosthetic legs for amputees in Vietnam.

Born and raised in Vietnam, Dr. Vo witnessed people crawling in the dirt without legs. He wanted to find a way to help them walk again. In 2009, he met with ‘Mercer on Mission’ director, Craig McMahan, to utilize the program and teach students how to make prosthetic legs.

‘Mercer on Mission’ is a study abroad initiative where students serve others.  He has led the students to Vietnam and Haiti to set up prosthetic clinics. Dr. Vo and his team have created 3,200 prosthetic legs so far.

He was named Southern Conference’s Inaugural Faculty Member of the year and also recognized at halftime of the title game of the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Championship.
