Mercer University basketball players serve students lunch

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A few players from the Mercer University Men’s Basketball team stepped off the court and into the kitchen on Wednesday.

Weaver Middle School invited them to be their celebrity lunch servers as part of National Lunch Week.

National Lunch Week is a time to let parent’s know what’s happening with the school lunch program.

Bibb County School officials believe good food is essential for kids to focus in school.

“Students work is to learn and fulfill their educational goals. In order for them to do that, they’ve got to have the fuel that they need which is a good, nutritious lunch,” explained Cleta Long, the Nutrition Director for Bibb County Schools.

Wednesday’s meal included local products, like tomatoes from a farm in Lizella, in honor of Georgia Day. Long said this is a way to help stimulate Middle Georgia’s economy.
