Mercer University announces ‘multi-million-dollar’ upgrades to athletic facilities
Mercer University and The Mercer Athletic Foundation unveiled plans Thursday for three major facility upgrades.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mercer University and The Mercer Athletic Foundation unveiled plans Thursday for three major facility upgrades.
The projects include a baseball performance center, a new facility for the men’s and women’s tennis and golf programs and an end zone addition at Five Star Stadium.
“I firmly believe each of these projects will elevate our programs,” Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole said. “They position us to win recruiting battles and compete for championships. The generosity of our donor base never ceases to amaze me.”
Baseball Performance Center: Named the Cantrell Family Baseball Performance Center, the two-story, 9,200-square-foot facility will feature batting cages, a pitching lab, team meeting space, a recruiting lounge, spectator balcony, coaches offices and a coaches locker room. Located at OrthoGeorgia Park, it’s supported by Charlie and Tammy Cantrell, along with a major gift from the Claude Smith Family Legacy Endowment.
Tennis/Golf Facility: The new tennis and golf facility, funded by Janet Overstreet, the W.L. Amos, Sr. Foundation and Kevin and Carolyn Scheck, will span 5,800 square feet. It will be dedicated as the Copelan Tennis Complex and the Overstreet Tennis Center, with the golf facility named the Kevin and Carolyn Scheck Golf Performance Center. This facility will include locker rooms for the tennis program, a tennis lounge, office space for the tennis and golf coaches, a golf lounge and repair room as well as a putting lab and multiple hitting bays for golf.
Football/Lacrosse End Zone Facility: Funded by Mercer Trustee William H. (Billy) Anderson II, Les Cole and Southern Trust Insurance, the end zone project at Five Star Stadium will create a multi-tier tailgate area. “This addition will transform the grass berm underneath the stadium’s videoboard into a multi-tier tailgate area,” a Mercer news release said. “On the field, tailgate tents will be available on gameday, allowing fans a unique in-game experience. The top tier of the facility will feature common space to encourage mingling on gameday with seating and concession areas.”
