Mercer Men’s Soccer Concludes Non-Conference Play at Presbyterian

MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS) – The Mercer men’s soccer team wraps up the non-conference portion of its 2013 schedule when it takes on Presbyterian on September 28 at 7 p.m.

Scouting the Opposition

Presbyterian enters play on Saturday evening with a 2-4 overall record after most recently dropping a 3-2 decision to Georgia Southern on Sept. 24. The Blue Hose are 1-0 against Atlantic Sun Conference teams this season after pulling out a 4-3 win over USC Upstate in its season opener. Mercer downed Presbyterian 4-0 last season at home and lead the all-time series between the two schools 2-0. Defense has been a problem for Presbyterian thus far in 2013, as it ranks last in the Big South Conference allowing 3.67 goal per game for its opponents. Junior Josh Carter paces the Blue Hose offense with nine points on four goals and one assist.

Last Time Out

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Mercer men’s soccer team battled late, but eventually dropped a 3-1 decision at No. 20 Memphis on Sept. 24 at Miller Rose Stadium.

Mercer (1-7) drops to 0-3 against ranked teams this season, falling to No. 24 UNC Wilmington, No. 20 UAB and No. 20 Memphis (6-1-1).

After a scoreless first half, Memphis stepped on the gas offensively coming out of intermission. Goals by senior Shane Keely and junior Fakhry Khulfan made the score 2-0 Tigers mid-way through the second half.

Mercer cut the Tigers lead in half in the 72nd minute of play when sophomore David Murtaugh fired a shot that just evaded a charging Memphis goalkeeper to make the score 2-1. The goal for Murtaugh was his first of the 2013 campaign and third of his career.

Game Notes

– Junior Greg Ranjitsingh tied his career-high with 10 saves in the loss to Memphis on Sept. 24. Ranjitsingh’s 10 stops against Memphis are the most in a single-game by an A-Sun Conference goalkeeper this season and moves him into fifth place all-time in Mercer program history with 199 career saves.
