Meet the Democratic Candidates Running for Bibb County School District 3

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The democratic race for the Bibb County School Board seat in District 3 is coming down to the wire.

Incumbent Susan Sipe and her opponent Merritt Johnson are on the ballot.

Sipe wants your vote again. She believes her experience as the sitting District 3 board member is what Bibb County needs.

“We’re in the middle of a lot of projects right now. We’re in a sort of tumultuous time,” Sipe said. “I think its important that we have board members who are on the board who have been there, understand how it works, who understands fiscal responsibility and budgets and I have that knowledge.”

Sipe says it’s not easy learning the ins and outs of this position.

“It’s a very steep learning curve, joining this board,” she said. “It takes really about a year before you get comfortable with how it works and how budgets work and I think its very important that we re-elect those people who have been on the board and who have the knowledge and can bring it back.”

But her opponent disagrees. Johnson says the board needs a shake-up and he’s the one who can do it.

“Right now I feel like the whole morale throughout the city, not just my district, is kind of down and I think they want somebody to come in and bring a new light and change to the area,” Johnson said. “I’m the man for the job.”

Johnson says he wants to make an impact on all the children in Bibb County.

“I think [there’s] a lot of opportunity to bring the the community, get involved with the system so the children have everything they need to be successful,” he said.

The winner of the democratic race for District 3 will take on Republican candidate Angela Freeman in November.
