Two inmates die days apart at McRae women’s prison

Corrections officials say both deaths remain under investigation and no signs of foul play were reported.

MCRAE-HELENA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Georgia Department of Corrections confirms two inmates at McRae Women’s Facility died within days of each other this month.

According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, inmate Shannon Rush died at the prison on Saturday, May 16. Officials say the cause of death remains undetermined.

GDC officials say there were no reports of an altercation and no signs of foul play. Rush was serving a 15-year sentence for armed robbery out of Elbert County, according to GDC.

Officials also confirmed inmate Chasity King died on Monday, May 18 at the same facility. King’s cause of death also remains undetermined, with no reports of an altercation or signs of foul play. According to GDC, King was serving a five-year sentence for aggravated assault out of Fulton County.

Officials say both bodies were turned over to the county coroner and will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab to determine official causes of death.

The deaths remain under investigation by the GDC Office of Professional Standards.
