Mayor Lester Miller announces MVP initiative aimed at decreasing crime
Mayor Miller says he wants to see a change in the community.
MACON, Georgia(41NBC/WMGT)- Macon-Bibb Mayor Lester Miller along with Commissioners and residents gathered Thursday morning at the Rosa Parks Square.
Mayor Miller announced the Macon Violence Prevention initiative. It’s aimed at lowering the crime rate in the community.
“We are going to do is ask the Commissioners to set up a meeting in their districts, then do surveys,” said Mayor Miller.
After the surveys are completed, they will bring in professionals to help coordinate everything.
Mayor Miller says the crime has increased in the community over the last several years, so he hopes the new initiative will address the problem.
With the help of the Sheriff’s Office, School Board , District Attorney and community, Mayor Miller says he wants to see a change.
Sheriff David Davis says they will work with each neighborhood in the county to make sure they are keeping the community safe.
“We are going to adopt different ideas and different methods to address the different challenges that may befoul each and every one of the communities,” said Sheriff Davis.
During the announcement, families gathered to show their support for the new initiative. Those in attendance say they just want the violence to stop.
Venice Hillman lost her son a month ago to violence. Hillman says she will support the initiative and hopes she can live without fear one day.
