Mayhem sets opening date
The Macon Mayhem announced its first game date Wednesday at a Stanley Cup watch party at Buffalo Wild Wings. The game will be played at the Centreplex.
The start time wasn’t released, and neither was the opponent.
“It’s now something we can shoot for, something we can look forward to,” says head coach Kevin Kerr. “As we sign players, we can start getting them signed up and get them locked and loaded ready to go for October 23 also.”
To help build its roster, the Mayhem was allowed to choose six players last month in a Southern Professional Hockey League expansion draft. The players were on other SPHL rosters last season and were only required to play for Macon if they chose to stay in the league.
“It’s been kind of slow,” Kerr says. “We’ve committed to three of the six. Two of the other six are veteran guys, so we’re hoping that that can come to a close very shortly–hopefully in the next couple of weeks.
“I think with those type guys, there could be a little bit of a waiting game too, uncertainty on what they want to do with their future. Gotta be a little bit patient with them, but we’re going to get to the point where we’ll have to make some other decisions.”
