Mary Persons hopes to take next step after back-to-back 10-win seasons
It’ll be tough to match last year’s success as the team searches for a new quarterback, but Coach Nelson isn’t worried, “It’s the next guy mentality… we’ve got somebody on our roster that’s going to step up, and take on that challenge and be successful with it.”
The defense was a major part in the Bulldogs reaching double-digits in wins, as they held their opponents to under 10 points in 6 of their games. With the the majority of their defensive nucleus remaining intact, Nelson believes his squad can thrive when the expectations are set at a high level, “I think at Mary Persons, we kind of take pride in the fact that we can play good defense. We hope and expect our kids to perform the same way this year.”
Two of the schools defensive anchors, seniors Demarcus Davis and Mykel Lucear, will be leaned on to keep the points off the board from the opposing team as the season progresses. Coach Nelson likes the experience and leadership they bring on and off the field.
The Bulldogs will start their season on August 29th against Jackson, and will play their first home contest against Lamar County on September 12th.
