Mary Persons forfeits games after GHSA ruling on transfer player

Mary Persons High School has forfeited all of its football games to this point after the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) determined the school failed to submit appropriate documentation for a transfer student and also failed to determine the academic eligibility of the player.

FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mary Persons High School has forfeited all of its football games to this point after the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) determined the school failed to submit appropriate documentation for a transfer student and also failed to determine the academic eligibility of the player.

That’s according to a Monroe County School District news release.

On Tuesday, the District says its administrators were alerted to “a possible ineligible player” on the Mary Persons football team. A subsequent investigation led administration to determine the player, who transferred from another GHSA member school, was ineligible per GHSA bylaws.

According to the District, Mary Persons must pay a $1,500 fine and will also forfeit all games the ineligible player participated in. The team was also placed on “severe warning status” for a probationary period of one calendar year.

The Bulldogs are now 0-4 heading into their region matchup on Friday, September 27 against Upson-Lee.  As of Thursday afternoon, the game is still scheduled for 7:30, but a final decision on the game will be made after Helene has moved through Monroe County and damage is assessed, according to a Facebook post.
