Man charged with running a moonshine still in Troup County

LAGRANGE, Georgia (AP) – Authorities say they busted up a 200-gallon moonshine still in Troup County and arrested a local man.

The LaGrange Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/22Nzs4b) Troup County Sheriff James Woodruff said deputies and state revenue agents arrested 22-year-old Carlton Maddox on Tuesday afternoon when he came to the property, which was under surveillance.

Maddox was charged with possession of untaxed liquor, operation of a distillery, both misdemeanors, and felony manufacturing of distilled spirits.

Robert Wood, a special agent in charge with the Department of Revenue’s Alcohol and Tobacco Division estimated the still could probably produce 75 to 100 gallons a day.

It was found Monday when a county employee investigated complaints of illegal garbage dumping. Investigators set up a hidden camera on the property.

It was unclear if Maddox has an attorney.
