Milledgeville Man accused of stabbing mother, two dogs to death

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A man is accused of stabbing his mother and her two dogs to death in Milledgeville.

Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Massee said it’s been a tough case for him to work because he is so close to this family. He’s friends with the victim’s parents. He knows her first cousin who is the sheriff in Warren County. They went to junior college and the Sheriff’s Elect Academy together. When Massee found out 76-year-old Sandra Brantley-Barrett was murdered, it hit him hard.

“I’ve got so much interaction with this family that it almost was like a family death,” said Massee.

Massee was emotional as he talked about his relationship with Brantley-Barrett and her family.

“She gardened a lot. She loved her dogs. Basically, these dogs were like her family,” recalled Massee.

Brantley-Barrett was found stabbed to death in her home which is near Lake Sinclair. Her beloved Jack Russell Terrier and Shih Tzu were also murdered.

“It’s an unusual crime scene because we’ve worked a lot of murders, but you don’t work too many crime scene where you go in and not only is an individual killed in her home, but also two pets. Two animals killed in the same manner as the human victim,” explained Massee.

Massee said Steven Barrett was told Tuesday morning he’s facing three active charges in Baldwin County. He’s charged with murder and two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Barrett was taken into custody Wednesday, March 16 the day his mother, 76-year-old Sandra Brantley-Barrett, was found. He was held on a probation warrant for violating a stay-away order. The court order came after Barrett was accused of assaulted his mother.

“To be quite candid, I don’t think that the mother wanted the stay-away order to be enforced, but we run into that many times in a domestic situation,” said Massee.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office has responded to several domestic violence calls at the Barrett home in the past.

Barrett is being held at the Baldwin County Jail without bond at this time. Massee said if any bond is set, a superior court judge will do it. No court dates have been set yet. The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office doesn’t have a motive for the murder.
