MWA says discolored water remains safe to use as crews investigate reports across Macon
MWA says crews are flushing hydrants in affected areas and encourages customers to report ongoing issues.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon Water Authority says it is investigating reports of discolored water after residents across multiple parts of Macon raised concerns on social media this week.
Posts shared in neighborhood Facebook groups across town show residents describing water that appears yellow, brown or murky. Complaints have been posted from areas including North Macon, South Bibb, Lake Wildwood, Wesleyan Woods, Rivoli and other neighborhoods.
In response to a 41NBC inquiry, Macon Water Authority spokesperson Rachad Hollis said crews are actively working in affected areas.
“We are aware of reports of discolored water in parts of the community and are actively investigating,” he wrote. “In response to customer concerns, Macon Water Authority crews are flushing fire hydrants in different areas to help clear sediment from water lines.”
Hollis added that the water remains safe to use.
“While this can temporarily affect the appearance of the water, it remains safe to use,” the statement said. “Customers who continue to experience issues are encouraged to contact Macon Water Authority by phone or report the issue through our website so crews can respond and assist.”
Residents posting online say the discoloration has been noticeable for several days, with some reporting low water pressure and others saying hydrant flushing has already happened near their homes.
Macon Water Authority did not specify how many customers may be affected or how long the investigation is expected to take.
In previous reporting in October, MWA told 41NBC News that sudden changes in water flow, including heavy fire hydrant use, can stir up harmless sediment or minerals in water lines, temporarily affecting taste, odor or appearance without impacting water safety.
MWA says it conducts extensive daily water quality testing to ensure water delivered to homes and businesses continues to meet all state and federal standards.
