Macon Water Authority approves 2025 rate increase to fund infrastructure projects
The Macon Water Authority (MWA) Board of Directors has approved a rate increase for water and wastewater services, set to go into effect on January 1, 2025.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon Water Authority (MWA) Board of Directors has approved a rate increase for water and wastewater services, set to go into effect on January 1, 2025.
According to a MWA news release, the decision, made on November 7, follows a thorough rate analysis identifying additional funding needed to support critical infrastructure projects and meet increasing service demands.
“The approved rate adjustment reflects MWA’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing the quality and reliability of water and wastewater services for all customers,” the release said.
Funds generated by the increase will go directly toward financing “essential upgrades and expansions,” including improvements at the Lower Poplar and Rocky Creek Water Reclamation Facilities and MWA’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) implementation.
MWA says the rate hike means an average household using 5,000 gallons per month will see an increase of about $6.23 per month for water services. Households using MWA’s sewer services will see an additional $6.23 increase, which means an increase of $12.46 per month for combined water and sewer.
“We recognize that our customers, like us, are facing rising costs in today’s economic climate,” MWA President and Executive Director Ron Shipman said. “There is never a convenient time to adjust rates, but we appreciate the cooperation and support of our valued customers. This investment enables us to secure the equipment needed now to meet our community’s future needs.”
The increase is part of MWA’s 2025-2029 Capital Improvement Plan, which includes substantial projects addressing aging infrastructure and supporting service expansion. In October 2024, MWA issued a $102.7 million bond to fund these efforts, with an additional $300 million bond planned for 2026.
“Together, these bonds will enable upgrades and expansions that enhance service delivery, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and improve system resilience,” the release said.
MWA says the rate change will also affect MWA customers in Jones and Monroe counties, as well as the city of Byron, starting in February 2025, per a contractual agreement. MWA will provide more information and resources on the rate adjustment on its website, including FAQs and details on assistance programs.
