Macon Volunteer Clinic founder Dr. Chapin Henley dies at 85
The Macon Volunteer Clinic (MVC) is remembering Dr. Chapin Henley, a beloved surgeon and MVC founder, after he died on Friday in Columbus.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Macon Volunteer Clinic (MVC) is remembering Dr. Chapin Henley, a beloved surgeon and MVC founder, after he died on Friday in Columbus.
Dr. Henley, who delivered more than 5,000 babies and performed Georgia’s first laparoscopic hysterectomy, was a “cherished surgeon, family man, and community pillar,” according to an MVC email on Monday.
“Dr. Henley’s profound legacy is etched into the lives he touched through his compassionate care, his dedication to his family, and his unwavering commitment to our community,” the email stated.
Born on August 12, 1938, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Henley pursued his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University and seminary at Emory University before earning his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine. In 2001, he established the Macon Volunteer Clinic to provide free healthcare to the working uninsured in Macon-Bibb County.
“His consistent support and dedication to MVC over the last 21 years have left an indelible mark on our organization and the community we serve,” the email stated.
Dr. Henley is survived by his wife, Sally Henley, and his children, Matt Henley, Elizabeth Hipps, Adam Henley and Russell Henley. He was predeceased by his son, Drew Henley.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church, 7211 Britton Dr. in Columbus. Visitation will follow in the church fellowship hall.
