Train derailment near downtown Macon blocks crossing; no injuries reported

A Georgia Central Railway train derailed near the Macon Yard Monday, prompting a cleanup and investigation. No injuries or hazardous materials were reported.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Georgia Central Railway train derailed nine railcars near the Macon Yard on Lower Poplar Street around 11 a.m. Monday, temporarily blocking a crossing and leading to a cleanup and investigation, according to a statement from a railroad spokesperson.

No injuries were reported, and no hazardous materials were involved. Some of the derailed cars were empty, while others were carrying a food byproduct.

As of 4:30 p.m., crews were working to clear the scene and reopen the affected crossing.

“We are working as quickly and safely as possible to clear the scene and reopen that crossing,” spokesperson Tom Ciuba said.
