Macon Storm Makes History with First Female Lacrosse Game in Macon
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The object of lacrosse is to get a tiny rubber ball into your opponent’s goal. Not with your hands or your feet, but with a stick!
And it’s not as easy as it may look.
“It was (hard) at first,” Katie Tong, a 7th grader at Mount de Sales says. “But then we got the hang of it, and it became easier.”
Tong is one of 16 girls on the “Macon Storm,” a team made up of middle schoolers from around middle Georgia.
“We have kind of fed off the Macon Youth Lacrosse boy’s team,” head coach Deana Grogan says. “Boy’s lacrosse and girl’s lacrosse is a little bit different, so we wanted to bring girl’s lacrosse to Macon.”
With a few tips and pointers from their coach and from both the men’s and women’s programs at Mercer, the Storm made history Saturday.
Its match against Henry County at Stratford Academy was the first female lacrosse game to ever be played in Macon.
“I’ve always wanted to be on the first team, you know?” Mount de Sales 8th grader Carson Piper says. “Be able to say I was on the first lacrosse team.”
On this day, the girls came up short, 7-5. But in their only other game this fall, they lost 15-5. Every girl we talked with gave all the credit to their head coach.
“She’s one of the main people that calms you down and is like, ‘You can do it!’ Stratford 8th grader Morgan Mathis says. “And you’re just like, ‘You know what? I can!’ So you just go out there and
you show them what you can do.”
Grogan tosses all the glory back to the girls.
“I just want to give my credit to these girls,” Grogan says. “They didn’t know the sport of lacrosse. I think I had four girls that have kind of played before and the rest of them are brand new. To come this far in such a short period of time, they’ve done extremely well.”
The girls will most likely join a league from the Atlanta area when the season starts back up in the spring.
One day soon, you could see some of them suiting up for programs at high schools in Macon. Stratford and FPD both have plans to start up lacrosse programs in the near future.
