Macon Smiles to have ‘candy buy back’ for troops overseas

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Candy consumption will soon be at an all time high as All Hallow’s Eve creeps closer. Starting the day after Halloween, a local dentist office in Macon will be buying back candy for a good cause.

The spookiest time of the year is also the sweetest–even at the dentist office.

“We’re doing a Halloween ‘candy buy back’ this coming November 1st and 2nd all day long,” said Dr. Sheila Shah with Macon Smiles Dentistry.

She’s making sure everyone gets to sink their teeth into something sugary including American Troops overseas.

“Kids can drop off their left over Halloween candy, and I will buy it from them for a $1 a pound,” she said.

They’ll send those pounds of candy to troops through Operation Shoebox, an organization that delivers care packages to deployed soldiers.

“Operation Shoebox operates year round and the candy is a part of many things that go into the care packages. Also the care packages they give at Halloween–it is a sweet surprise,” Shah continued.

As the daughter of a military vet, Shah says it’s the least she could do to bring in the season of giving.

“We want to support our troops and this is a great way to teach children to give back and introduce them into giving and to get them thinking of others,” said Shah.

Shah say’s she’s happy to be giving back while still answering her calling to fight the cavities that too many sweet treats could bring.

Macon Smiles will also be accepting candy donations from adults, but children are the only ones who’d get the $1 per pound in return.

Children have to be present to get the $1 for their donations.
