Macon rallies to support Kendrick Johnson; family meets with U.S. Attorney
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Hundreds rallied in Macon Friday in support of Kendrick Johnson, the Valdosta teen who’s body was found rolled up in a wrestling mat in his gym last year.
His family met with U.S. Attorney Michael Moore today, and their attorney’s called the meeting “interesting,” and think there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered.
Old hymns, and cries could be heard for miles Friday as hundreds piled in front of the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Macon.
It was a personal experience for Jeanette Thomas.
It’s coming up on the five year anniversary since her grandson died. She believes he was killed.
“All the people that are here today are fighting for someone that they’ve lost. Give us justice, that’s all we want,” Thomas said.
Johnson’s death was ruled as an accident.
His parents, along with their attorneys, listened to dozens of speakers who think otherwise, believing the teen was killed, and want to see justice.
“This has been a journey that is now in it’s 15th, 16th month. For all that we knew at the time that this case first began, and for there not to have been and arrest by now. Certainly we are concerned about the pace at which thing are taking place,” the Johnson family attorney Chevenne King said.
The family met with U.S. Attorney Michael Moore, who stepped in on the case, and while they say there is progress, they believe it’s taking too long to get answers.
Johnson’s mother Jacquelyn says the critics who think the family is continuing to fight money are wrong and they’re stopping until they get closure.
“We want to let them know, that we’re not going anywhere, no matter the lies, the deceit. No matter what they say about the Johnson family. They just messed up and killed the wrong child this time,” Jacquelyn said.
Supporters held the rally Friday because it’s the 46th anniversary since Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated.
No word yet on when the U.S. Attorney’s investigation will be complete.
