MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Landmarks in Macon will be part of a statewide effort to recognize crime victims during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
Marsy’s Law for Georgia announced several locations across the state will be illuminated in purple, including Mercer University’s pedestrian bridge and the “Macon” sign in downtown Macon.
The lighting is part of an annual campaign to raise awareness for victims’ rights and show support for survivors and their families.
Other participating locations across Georgia include sites in Atlanta, Norcross, Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, and Dalton.
Statewide effort tied to national observance
National Crime Victims’ Rights Week runs April 19 through April 25 this year, with the theme “Listen. Act. Advocate. Protect victims, serve communities.”
Marsy’s Law for Georgia said the initiative is designed to amplify the voices of crime victims and recognize those who support them.
Throughout the month, the organization is also honoring individuals who work in victim advocacy with its Champion Award.
Keir Chapple, director of the Georgia Office of Victims Services, was the first recipient this year.
In a news release, officials said the awards recognize efforts to support victims through the justice process and ensure they are informed and heard.
