MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Sardis-Heard Funeral Home held a Memorial Day service Monday honoring service members who died in wars including World War I, World War II and the Korean War.

Speaker and retired Marine Corps veteran Jeramie Frasure says he was unsure of what he wanted to do after high school, but after a major global event, he knew serving his country was the answer.

“In 2001 I was sitting in history class when the World Trade Center was hit,” he said. “And I knew in my mind that I wanted revenge. I knew in my mind that I had a job to do.”

Frasure says he wants the younger generation to know Memorial Day isn’t about the living.

“It’s to remember the ones that have gone on, the ones that have died, and sacrificed for our county,” he said. “And I want them to say their names so that they are not forgotten.”

Frasure says serving in the military is a selfless act.

“When you do join the military, you remember it’s not for you, you’re doing something that’s a calling higher than yourself,” he said. “And you’re doing it for love of country, love of God, and you’re committed to the cause. And whenever you do that, everybody wins.”

Frasure believes every person should understand this message before enlisting.

“Do you do it for other people, because those guys and girls that gave up their life, they didn’t do it for self, they did it for other people,” he said. “They did it for love of country, and at the end of the day, we all have to ask that question when we get up to heaven :Do you know me?'”

Frasure and Sardis-Heard Funeral Home say they will continue to celebrate the fallen and their sacrifice.
