Macon man accused of firing through glass door toward deputy, 2 others

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A Macon man was arrested Saturday after a deputy said he fired through a glass door toward the deputy and two other people on Napier Avenue.

Kelsey Aujani Damali was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated assault against law enforcement and one count of criminal trespass involving property damage, according to an incident report provided by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

The report did not list any injuries.

According to the report, a deputy responded to a home in the 4000 block of Napier Avenue just before 7 p.m. after a report of a person with a gun.

According to the deputy’s account, a woman standing in the carport pointed out a man in the yard who she said had a gun and was being disorderly. The deputy wrote that the man appeared impaired and that he began detaining him and removing a firearm from his pocket.

The deputy wrote that while he was detaining the man, another man approached the carport door inside the home and began firing a pistol through the glass.

The deputy wrote that the shots were directed toward him, the woman and the man he was detaining. The woman fell to the ground and narrowly avoided injury, according to the report.

The deputy wrote that he drew his gun and ordered the shooter to put down his weapon. The man complied, then walked farther inside the home. The deputy later found him in a hallway bathroom and took him into custody.

The deputy identified the shooter as Damali and said he confirmed that identification by reviewing his body camera footage and a home security recording. Five spent .22-caliber casings were recovered near the carport door, along with a pistol, according to the report.

Two witnesses told the deputy the other man had become upset after women refused to go to a hotel with him. One witness said he showed a gun after being asked to leave and that Damali began shooting to protect people inside the home.

The report identified Damali as the only confirmed shooter.

The other man was released and taken to the hotel where he lived. His gun was held for safekeeping because the deputy determined he was too intoxicated to handle it safely, according to the report.

Damali was taken to the Bibb County Jail.
