Macon Honors Music Legend Otis Redding; Renames Trolley
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The city of Macon is renaming one of NewTown Macon’s trolleys in memory of music legend Otis Redding.
The Macon legend would have been 72 on Monday.
If you’re walking around downtown Macon, then you’ve probably seen NewTown Macon’s trolleys rolling around the city.
The unique experience gives tourists and residents an opportunity to see the area in a different way.
NewTown Macon renamed one of its trolleys to honor music legend Otis Redding.
“Macon continues to amaze us with the accolades that they give to my father, and it’s amazing that every year it gets better and better, they never forget to honor him or his legacy, so we’re absolutely excited today,” Redding said.
Redding’s daughter Karla Redding – Andrews spoke to a crowded Cotton Ave on Monday, about the legacy her father left.
“I don’t think Macon will ever forget Otis Redding and its so nice to see, even as this younger generation comes along, I saw the younger kids here today, that they never forget the legacy that Otis Redding, and the platform that he set for them, right here in Macon, Georgia,” Redding said.
Terrell Sandefur, who works social media for the Redding Foundation, suggested in a meeting with the city that they name one its trolleys after the music icon.
“I took the opportunity to kind of barge in there and say I think the next trolley that Macon has in named after Otis Redding,” Sandefur
So the city decided on “dreams to remember,” a soulful classic that has some family history.
“You know it touches our hearts because it’s a song written by my mother and my father together. So to honor both of them in that way is really spectacular,” Redding said.
Sandefur hopes visitors from all over the world experience Macon and realize how much the city appreciates “The Big O.”
NewTown Macon says “dreams to remember” will be one of the vehicles used to tell Macon’s story of music, architecture, and history to all of their guests.
