Macon Group Celebrates Start of Kwanzaa at Douglass Theatre

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Thursday marks the first day of Kwanzaa!

For more than 20 years, the Kwanzaa Cultural Access Center in Macon has celebrated the week-long holiday.

Thursday, dozens gathered at the historic Douglass Theatre for a night of unity.  It’s a themed holiday, where each day places the focus on a different principle.

The theme for 2013 is “Sowing and Harvesting Seeds of Good.”

“The qualities or different principles: unity, self determination, cooperative economics, collective responsibility, purpose, creativity and faith, it’s something I apply thoughout the year,” says Kadir Muhammad with KCAC.  “Not just December 26 through January 1st.”

Friday night, the celebration continues at the Douglass.  The theme for the day is self-determination.

Muhammad says typically, Friday night is the busiest.  Called “Youth Night” and complete with a talent show, the event starts at 7 p.m.
