Macon gas station owner talks security after recent robberies

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A worker repaired damage from a recent robbery at the AK Express on Old Clinton Road Tuesday.

“And stop all the robbing and killing and stuff, man,” said Harry Daniels, who works at nearby Billy’s Mobile Glass.

It was the second time in three weeks the store had been hit.

“People don’t want to get out and work for what they earn,” said Daniels. “If someone’s going to do something wrong then they need to be caught and justice needs to be served.”

Justice and safety is why Nirvika Desai is thankful for lots of security at her gas station on Emery Highway.

“You work with cash–that’s the biggest thing,” said Desai.

It’s just a few miles away from the AK Express.

“People tend to feel this is a place where they can get easy money,” said Desai.

Cameras line the walls and point at every angle in the store.

“Cameras–maybe sometimes the glasses you know is bulletproof or some sort of security measures. Bars, I’ve seen,” said Desai.

Workers also have security come each night during closing time.

“It also helps me feel secure, but maybe not to customers,” said Desai. “They may not enjoy the closeness because they may feel like we’re disconnected with them–not connected.”

So Desai and her co-workers try to be safe, but still have a good relationship with customers.

“Because nobody wants to be in that position where you can lose your life,” said Desai. “Because you’re here to work–make money for you, your family and do something for the community.”
